One of the largest veterans groups in the United States, Veterans of Foreign Wars supports community and legislative activities that encourage patriotism. The organization monitors all legislation affecting veterans and provides assistance to veterans for all needs related to their military service. Membership is open to all U.S. citizens who were honorably discharged from the armed forces and who fought in a foreign military campaign of the United States. The VFW first admitted women members in 1978. Women may also join the Ladies Auxiliary, which provides community service and promotes patriotism. VFW publications include VFW Magazine, Communicator, and Washington Action Reporter.
